Loess Hills Prairie Seminar (May 30 to June 1,
2008)
The annual Loess Hills Prairie Seminar (near Onawa) is
one of our favorite ways to experience and learn about Iowa’s
Loess Hills. Most programs are held outside at the Loess
Hills Wildlife Management Area, a fun and informal setting.
Spend a day or a weekend participating in a wide range of
programs—Butterflies for Beginners; Archeology Cold
Case Detectives, A Plant’s-Eye View of the Prairie,
Environmental Writing Skills, Archery for Adults & Kids,
hikes, auto tours, and dozens more. See the entire program
list and registration information at http://www.nwaea.k12.ia.us/en/upcoming_events/loess_hills_prairie_seminar/index.cfm.
Whether you’ve always meant to see Iowa’s Loess
Hills or you’ve been there dozens of times, this is
a great event!

A Best Kept Iowa Secret! - (review from Summer 2006)
This past June was our family's second year to attend
the Loess Hills Prairie Seminar near Onawa, Iowa. By word-of-mouth,
we heard about this seminar the previous year. After attending,
we have concluded that this might be one of Iowa's "best
kept secrets" since we had not heard of it before.
This seminar is an awesome opportunity to learn more
about the uniqueness of the Loess Hills, wildlife, ecosystems
and much, much more! It provides the opportunity to educate,
inform and involve the general public in learning about
the uniqueness and value of the Loess Hills.
This Loess Hills Prairie Seminar is coordinated in cooperation
with the Iowa Department of Natural Resources and Monona
County Conservation Board, with the volunteer assistance
of many individuals, schools, and conservation and environmental
education organizations. The seminar is packed full of
conservation and environmental information and education
for people of all ages. It also provides the opportunity
for participants to network with other organizations and
prairie enthusiasts.
Our 8 year old daughter, Larissa, thoroughly enjoyed
the seminar the first year and was eagerly looking forward
to it again this year. She has met new budding conservationists
her age and looks forward to renewing those friendships
again each year at the seminar.
The seminar provides many hands-on learning classes for
children as well as adults. It's a great outdoors classroom
for learning! As a homeschool teacher myself, I have learned
a lot from the children's classes too!
Mark you calendar for the next Loess Hills Prairie Seminar
to be held June 1-3, 2007. Don't let this wonderful educational
opportunity slip by! Bring the whole family and make it
a fun-filled educational family affair!
